Aust. mobile sites slooow compared to other countries

According to a recent study from mobile and Internet cloud monitoring firm Keynote Systems; international retailer counterparts outperform Australian mobile websites in download speed.

The study, Keynote’s first index to examine the mobile download speed and availability of retailers from geographies based outside the US, measured the performance of some of Australia’s leading retailer portals, with the results showing average download speeds of between 8.81 to almost 15 seconds. In comparison, Tesco’s mobile site, the largest of the U.K retailers, boasted an average download time of just 4.39 seconds. Download speed is one of the most important factors in mobile web browsing due to the impatience of people on the move.

Keynote’s Australian mobile partner Shaun Dobbin, CEO of Gomeeki commented, “The results of the index highlight the difficulties Australian consumers are encountering when attempting to access their favourite retailer’s products on mobile devices. I am hopeful Keynote’s mobile index will create increased awareness by retailers of the importance of developing efficient web sites for mobile devices and focus them on improvement in this area of their businesses”

Keynote manages the world’s largest mobile and Internet test & measurement network, covering over 275 locations and 160 metropolitan areas worldwide. For this particular index Keynote conducted hourly tests of the sites, across multiple cities over each wireless network 24/7 during the monitoring period, emulating the browsers of different smartphone devices.

Methodology

Keynote repeatedly tested each site in the index hourly and around the clock from one city (Sydney, London, Paris, Nüremberg, Stockholm and Tokyo) in the site’s home country respectively (Australia, UK, France, Germany, Sweden, and Japan) using two Tier 1 wireless networks at each location, emulating the mobile browser of HTC Incredible (Android operating system). Data are aggregated to provide an overall average in terms of both home page load speed and reliability.
